MYTH 6: CAPITALISM IS SYNONYMOUS WITH DEMOCRACY
The words “capitalism” and “democracy” are used interchangeably in our society, causing confusion to a great many Americans who are unaware that they are distinct and often conflicting systems. Capitalism is the economic system that creates and distributes wealth in our society, and democracy is the political system that governs us. There are several irresolvable conflicts between these two systems, among them: the mandate of a democratic government elected by the people, is to represent the interests of the majority; the mandate of capitalism is to extract maximum profit from this majority, which is not necessarily in the majority’s interests.
